Imparting the Light of Hope and Security to Our Young Successors

TOWARD A HOPEFILLED FUTURE WITH THE DAISHONIN’S WRITINGS: WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

from IKEDA SENSEI

Although the three inherent causes, or potentials, of the Buddha nature1 are possessed by all beings, if such beings do not encounter the right conditions by meeting a “good friend” or teacher, then they will not become awakened, they will not understand, their Buddha nature will not manifest itself. If they encounter the necessary conditions by meeting a good friend, however, then their Buddha nature will invariably become manifest. Hence such meetings are referred to as “conditions.”

“The Unanimous Declaration by the Buddhas,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 2, p. 861

The precious Buddha nature within each person shines forth brightly when it encounters a “good friend.”

Through meeting with their leaders and others who support their activities, our young members of the future division steadily awaken to and manifest their potential as Bodhisattvas of the Earth. The encouragement and inspiration they receive will remain with them as lifelong treasures. Such is the noble work of education, of nurturing young lives.

Connections forged based on the Mystic Law open the way for the eternal transmission of the correct teaching.

Summer is the season of dynamic growth for the future division. Let’s chant for the happiness of each one of our dear successors and impart the light of hope and security to them.

From the July 29, 2022, issue of the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper, Seikyo Shimbun

NOTE:

1. Three inherent potentials of Buddha nature: A principle formulated by T’ien-t’ai (538–97) that views the Buddha nature from three perspectives. The three inherent potentials are the innate Buddha nature; the wisdom to perceive it; and the good deeds, or practice, to develop this wisdom and cause the Buddha nature to emerge.
